Overview

Kenya is a destination that can be visited throughout the year, but each season offers a different experience. The movement of wildlife, the weather, and the atmosphere of the parks change with the seasons, giving travelers unique reasons to choose one period over another.

When to visit Kenya

This season follows the short rains, leaving the parks green and vibrant. The skies are clear and the wildlife viewing is excellent. In the Masai Mara, resident predators such as lions, cheetahs, and leopards remain very active.
Amboseli National Park is particularly rewarding during this period, offering large elephant herds against the striking backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. Lake Nakuru also comes alive with flamingos and pelicans, while rhinos and tree-climbing lions can be seen in the surrounding areas.
In Samburu, travelers can encounter rare species such as Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe along the Ewaso Nyiro River.
The long rains arrive at this time of year, bringing heavy showers that turn the landscape lush and green.
Some lodges close and travel can be more challenging due to muddy roads, but the parks remain open. The scenery is dramatic, birdwatching is at its best, and the number of visitors is very low. For travelers who enjoy solitude and lower costs, this can still be a rewarding period to visit.
This is the most popular season for safaris in Kenya. The dry weather concentrates animals around rivers and waterholes, making them easier to spot.
The Masai Mara becomes the center of attention as the Great Migration moves into the reserve from the Serengeti.
Between July and September, the famous river crossings along the Mara and Talek Rivers take place, creating one of the most spectacular wildlife experiences in the world.
Cooler temperatures, clear skies, and high wildlife densities make this the classic safari season. Because it is peak time, early booking is essential.
The short rains return during these months, but the showers are usually light and do not disrupt travel. The rains refresh the landscape, wildlife remains abundant, and migratory birds arrive, adding even more diversity.
The Masai Mara continues to offer year-round game viewing, while Amboseli, Tsavo, Samburu, and Lake Nakuru remain excellent choices. This is also a quieter and more affordable time to travel, with parks looking green and beautiful.
